By Fire & Rescue Captain Derek Dods
June 17, 2016

On June 17 at approximately 1444 hours (2:44 pm), units from MAVFC were dispatched for a vehicle collision with rescue and HAZMAT at the intersection of Rt. 27 and Watersville Rd. Upon arrival Medic 18 located a fuel truck that had overturned several times and another vehicle near the intersection. The driver of the fuel truck was self extricated with assistance from bystanders. Upon the arrival of Rescue 1, the crew split up and stretched a 1 3/4" handline for protection as well as assessed the situation. After investigating the fuel truck it was determined that there was some sort of leak from the vehicle, unknown where exactly it was leaking from. The truck was carrying 1400 gallons of gasoline and 1400 gallons of diesel fuel. HAZMAT teams from Carroll and Frederick Counties were dispatched to assist as well as Maryland Department of the Environment. A few houses in the immediate area were evacuated out of caution for a short while. Upon arrival of MDE they advised to cancel the HAZMAT team out of Frederick County. MDE handled the transfer of fuels to the fuel company's other vehicles. There were a total of 3 patients transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Once MDE finished the transfer of product and the scene was cleaned up, all units went in service and the scene returned to police control. Town of Mount Airy officials were on the scene due to the close proximity of a major town well.
